The total for each year are as follows:

2004 $1,352
2005 $2,429
2006 $3,577
2007 $3,557
2008 $3,428
Total $14,343

Many thanks go out to the various participants who have attended one or many crawls over the years. As we begin 2009 in an economic climate that is making it difficult for people to make ends meet, we will continue to attempt to raise money for those charities whose mission is to help people who are less fortunate. There were approximately 75 participants (it gets hard to keep count after the fourth or fifth bar), and a total of $900 was raised for the Lafayette Urban Ministry (LUM). LUM is a downtown homeless shelter which provides for those in need of a place to sleep and a warm meal.

Despite freezing rain and sleet during much of the crawl, participants braved the walks from venue to venue, where warm feelings and cold drinks made the weather seem almost insignificant. In keeping with the Mardi Gras theme, plenty of beads were made available for the participants, many of whom chose to exchange them through familiar New Orleans traditions. A grand time was had by all. Photos to follow in the coming weeks.

The next crawl will be held on Saturday, May 5. It will be the 3rd Annual "Crawlo de Mayo". The weather was perfect for crawling and the participants donated a total of $1,505 to the Community Family Resource Center for the Annual Community Christmas Day Dinner. A group of Lafayette Brewing Company regulars were sitting around drinking a few brews and someone suggested that we organize a pub crawl of the various downtown bars, since a lot of us spent most of our time at the Brew Pub, and didn't get to the other venues very often. As the discussion proceeded, it was suggested that it might be a good idea to use the crawl to raise money for a worthy charity. Drinking for Charity. What a nice concept!

It was decided to do a trial run on May 1, 2004. It was named the "May Day Crawl" (okay, we have a few socialists in the group) and it was attended by about 15 people. There was no money raised during this crawl. It was simply held to see if the participants could drink for 6 hours without getting shitfaced, and the bars could handle the unexpected influx of a large group. Based upon the success of this venture, it was decided to form a committee and organize regular crawls over the course of the next year.

The first "Official" crawl was held on July 3, 2004, and was named the "Red, White and Brew Crawl". The recipient of the first ever Pubcrawlers event was the Laura Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund, in the Department of Consumer and Family Sciences at Purdue. (Laura was the younger sister of LBC owner Nancy Emig, and Greg and Nancy started this scholarship upon Laura's unexpected death several years ago). Since most of the participants were LBC regulars who felt that we owed alot to Greg and Nancy for opening their fine establishment, we decided that this would be a worthy start for the organization.

The next Crawl took place on September 18, 2004 and was named the "Fall Crawl". Once again, the recipient was the scholarship fund. Together, these two crawls raised approximately $600 for the fund and will be used to help worthy Purdue students in the coming years.

At this point, the committee decided to step things up a bit and try to raise more funds and to spread these funds among needy charities in Lafayette. The subsequent crawls and the recipients for each are as follows:

"Christmas Chrawl" December 4, 2004 - Community and Family Resource Center. The Crawl raised a total of $552, which was used to help feed over 2,500 people on Christmas Day.

"Mardi Grawl" February 5, 2005 - Lafayette Urban Ministry. LUM runs a homeless shelter and provides food and emergency funding to those less fortunate in the community. A total of $515 was raised during the crawl, which will be used to support LUM's ongoing programs for needy children and families in the area.

"Crawlo de Mayo" May 7, 2005 - Lafayette Crisis Center. Staffed primarily by volunteers, the center offers an emergency hot line to assist people in crisis. A total of $475 was raised for this cause.

"Partee de Frog Crawl" August 27, 2005 - American Diabetes Association Camp John Warvel. This is a summer camp for kids with diabetes and we were able to send two kids with the $475 raised.

"2nd Annual Christmas Chrawl" December 3, 2005 - Community Family Resource Center. This was the second Chrawl held to raise money for the CFRC Annual Community Christmas Dinner. A total of $864 was raised during the event.

"2nd Annual Mardi Grawl" March 11, 2006 - Tippecanoe Community Health Center. The health center offers greatly reduced medical services to the community, especially for those without health insurance. A total of $670 was raised during this event.

"2nd Annual Crawlo de Mayo" May 6, 2006 - Wildcat Wildlife Center. The wildlife center treats injured wildlife and nurses them back to health so that they can be released back into the environment. A total of $492 was raised in this Crawl.

"Summer Crawl" July 22, 2006. Breast Cancer Awareness. This crawl was spearheaded by a regular participant who was planning to take part in a walk to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness. She brought along a group of new participants and a total of $910 was raised.

Summer Crawl 2006 photos

<img style="FLOAT: left; Despite scheduling conflicts for a large number of regular crawl participants, total participation was in the neighborhood of 45 people (it gets kind of hard to keep count after a while, you know). In other words, about one-half of the group consisted of new crawlers.

We were able to raise a total of $472, which will be donated to the Wildcat Wildlife Center of Delphi, IN. The WWC nurses injured and orphaned animals back to health prior to releasing them back into nature or placing them in a loving home. This was the first crawl devoted to four-legged and winged creatures and the generostiy of the participants was greatly appreciated.

After limited discussion among the organizers, it appears that the next crawl will most likely be held to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness. A date has not been set, so keep checking the site for more information.

"2nd Annual Crawlo de Mayo" to take place on May 6

The second annual "Crawlo de Mayo" will be held in downtown Lafayette on Saturday, May 6. The crawl took place on Saturday, March 11, with stops at the Lafayette Brewing Company, Chumley's, Sgt. Preston's, Hunter's Pub Down Under, Luxie's, Crawdaddies and the Knickerbocker Saloon.

The participant list grew at each stop along the way and nearly half of the crowd consisted of new participants. Committee thanks go out to the bars and restaurants for their food and drink specials, and to all of the participants who helped to make the event successful. This crawl brings the total amount raised to date in all 8 crawls to over $4000. All of this money has been contributed to worthy charitable causes throughout the Lafayette community.

The next scheduled crawl will be the "2nd Annual Crawlo de Mayo", which will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2006. Mr. Gherkin has been integrally involved in the development and success of a number of start-up companies in the Lafayette area over the past several years. He has served as an advisor and mentor to many, young and old, while they have struggled to establish their operations.

“Having a person like Ted join our group will add so much legitimacy that we couldn’t have asked for anything better” said Board member Kevin Green. “Now we feel that we can continue to grow this thing with Ted’s support. He has such a vast knowledge of the people and the workings of this community, that he will be able to open doors for us just by his participation.”

Board Member James Doyle added, “we felt like we were in a bit of a pickle in terms of our development. Ted should help us get over the hump”.

Mr. Gherkin hails from the little town of Fickle, IN, a virtual blink of an eye about 15 miles South of Lafayette. He attended Purdue University and obtained a BS and MBA in Business Administration. Married, with four children, he still finds time to lend a hand to worthwhile ventures. Having originally lived on a farm, Ted has always had a soft spot for those less fortunate, and he has devoted his life to helping others succeed.

“For a guy who has it all; good looks, a beautiful wife, great kids, money, he could be some stuck up guy and not give a crap about others. But Ted has taken advantage of his success and gone one step further, trying to bring the masses along with him. He is really quite a guy, and we are lucky to have the privilege of working with him as we move forward with this venture”, said Ken McCammon, Chair of the LDPCC.

The tentative date for the next Pub Crawl is March11, 2006, the “2nd Annual Mardi Grawl”. In attendance were roughly 45-50 festive beings celebrating the upcoming holidays and raising money to support the annual Community Family Resource Center Christmas Dinner. A total of $864 was raised during the eight hour event, setting a record for the most money ever raised through a single crawl.

The increase in attendance was acheived mostly by the first time appearance of roughly 25 people. Everyone in attendance had a great time, especially the new ones (some perhaps a bit too much), and everyone promised to take part in future crawls as often as possible.

The next crawl is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 4, and will be the 2nd Annual "Mardi Grawl".
